The Smell of Disgust

I still have Parosmia. It is the only thing you can think about when you're hungry---and I'm hungry all the time! Everything (most things) taste rotten and spoiled or like garbage---- or smell like rotting flesh, dead bodies, vomit or acid. The only thing I enjoy is some fruit, plain bread, plain noodles or lettuce with a vinegar dressing. I've lost about 10 pounds because I make myself eat things that taste rotten but I can only eat so much and I have to stop. I drink an ovaltine every morning holding my nose and have to brush my teeth right away with toothpaste that tastes a little like rotten fruit....i guess I have to "choose my poison", rotten fruit id better than the taste of chocolate....i guess.
I have had a CT, an MRI and now will undergo some neurological tests to see what is happening. I will mention that even though chocolate is aweful OREO still taste heavenly!

OH NO!!! Good luck w/the testing! It sounds like a crappy disorder. Is there any treatment, or is it considered neurological?

They really don't know. That's why I'm so desperate...
the ENT that is helping me (the third dr.) said there are a few smell clinics - one in
philidelphia, one on Washington that I could go to...I'm so disgusted. I don't want to have to do that. I'm going to see a neorologist because they need to rule out MS and a few other things. I have had a tremor for about 7 or 8 years and have been getting dizzy much more often, so... we'll see. I just want to enjoy food again, especially chocolate!

That sounds very annoying. Hope the tests show nothing serious.

Liked your Edison quote.

Have you checked into Carolyn Myss ("Energy Anatomy") to see if she addresses this?

Hope the docs find the cause & cure soon and that it's nothing serious!

If we ever visit, remind me to order you up an Oreo Blizzard at the local Dairy Queen. I do hope there is something they (the docs) can do to help. Keep us posted please!

Oh, P, I'm so sorry you're suffering from this. My mom went through this while she was on chemotherapy. FWIW, she ate TONS of lemon ice. She said it stayed pretty true to taste and it felt good to her throat (which was often sore). Hope it helps.

Sending prayers your way :)

look up dr. donald leopold. he can and i'm almost certain will help. i too have parosmia but i have the smell as i call it. he was in an article in the nytimes in 1998 i believe. i called him up at his office and he spoke to me for 30mins. i've been fine ever since. i still get it on occasion but never like i used to. he saved my life. he deals with the smel part but the article i read also had another dr. friend of his that dealt with the taste parosmia. so check him out, don;t relent. keep trying if you can;t get ahold of him just to get the other dr's name or any advice he may have. i know the hell you are going through and feel for you. good luck. i had a fever, thats how mine started. you never know how a phone call can change your life.
